According to Wikipedia, Mother’s day “recognizes mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well as their positive contributions to their families and society.” A day to make us feel special, and appreciated with flowers, breakfast in bed, and crafted gifts from the kids. But what do moms really want for mother’s day?
We will always love the kid crafted cards and school gifts. Even those last minute purchases from Walmart with the teddybear in a mug. All material gifts are amazing. Every girl loves pretty, expensive and shiny things. Especially those that come in tiny boxes. HOWEVER, what we really want is quite simple and economical:
we want a day of rest!
Yes! Just a day (or a week) to relax and do nothing.
I understand that mother’s day is a day to be with your families and the little people that earned you that title. But we’re tired! We wear the mom hat every day – cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, picking out school clothes, making sure home is done, prepping lunches, going on play dates, making mom friends, and more.
Give us just one day where we:
- Don’t have to clean up after anyone
- Get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep
- Binge watch our shows without getting kicked out of Netflix
- Have somebody else cook for us
- Don’t have to yell at the kids
- Don’t have to repeat ourselves
- Don’t have to change a diaper or bathe the kids
- Can drink our coffees or margaritas peacefully
- Go to the bathroom by ourselves
- Don’t have to be tour guides in our homes
- Find a completed “honey-do” list

To be truthful (as if I’m not already), this list doesn’t have to be accomplished only on Mother’s day. It can literally be any day of the week and hopefully repeated often throughout the year! Every day should be devoted to honoring and appreciating mother’s for everything we do!
If you think about it, this could happen with spa days, girl’s night or trips, or even a mom solo trip. It’s literally just a break to regroup and be ourselves again without always having to be “mom.”
Can we get the surprise of actually getting what we want?
