Peeps marshmallows are a staple during the Easter season. But let’s face it, you don’t really want your kids eating too many of them. On top of all the other sweets they’ll be ingesting during the festivities. So what can you do with left over peeps? You can easily throw them away but how about having some fun with them? Here’s what you can do with left over peeps:
My daughter’s school had a peep day in class and there was a page that they skipped. I thought it was a really good idea and decided to do it at home.
A SCIENCE EXPERIMENT!! Reminded me of my school days when we had to do science experiments with questions, hypothesis, materials, results and conclusion.

QUESTION: Which liquid will dissolve peeps the fastest?
MATERIALS: 4 bunny shaped peeps, 4 cups or bowls, water, juice of your choice (we used apple juice), soda of your choice (we used coca cola), vinegar, and timer.
HYPOTHESIS: My daughter chose juice and I chose soda.
Now it’s time to actually conduct our experiment. This is what we did.
We poured a good amount of each liquid in the cups and labeled them. Then put the peeps in. They kind of just stayed on the top. HOWEVER! there was major activity happening and spoiler alert.
RESULTS:
- WATER: changed the color of the peeps and was very slowly eating away at the sugar coating.
- APPLE JUICE: very slow changes but made the peeps soft
- COCA COLA: the peep bubbled immediately because of the carbonation but actually didn’t dissolve it as I assumed.
- VINEGAR: changed the color fairly quickly and the 3 dots of the face came off first.
It was taking a long time (over 40 minutes to be exact) so my daughter insisted on helping to move things along. We began to stir them at the same time and push them further in the liquid.
Even with this extra help, the activity was pretty slow with the exception of vinegar. It didn’t clump or make the peeps fall apart in chunks like juice and soda. It actually dissolved it, which is what we were looking for.
CONCLUSION: Vinegar.

Learn from my mistakes! Here’s what I would’ve done differently.
- Using a cup may have been a bad idea. The peeps floated on top the whole time and made the process longer.
- Use a bowl or plate. Place the peeps first then pour the liquid over it.
- Probably a best to do one at a time and time how long it takes.
